Osteoarthritis Treatment in Miami
Moving beyond temporary steroid shots to address the chronic synovial inflammation, cartilage thinning, and joint stiffness of Osteoarthritis (OA). Led by Dr. Nina Gupta, MD in Miami, Florida.
Osteoarthritis is an Active Inflammatory Disease
For decades, Osteoarthritis was considered simple "wear and tear"—inevitable friction eroding cartilage like tire tread on a car. Modern joint biology reveals that OA is an active biochemical disease driven by pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1beta, TNF-alpha), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and impaired subchondral bone remodeling. Addressing the cellular joint microenvironment is critical to arresting joint breakdown.
The Danger of Cortisone Injections
Major clinical studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrate that repeated intra-articular corticosteroid injections result in significantly greater cartilage volume loss and more rapid progression to joint replacement compared to saline or biological controls.
The 4 Clinical Stages of Osteoarthritis We Evaluate
Stage 1: Early / Minor OA
Microscopic cartilage softening with minimal joint space narrowing. Minor morning stiffness that resolves quickly with movement.
Stage 2: Mild OA
Visible joint space narrowing on X-ray, initial osteophyte (bone spur) development, and intermittent ache after athletic activity.
Stage 3: Moderate OA
Significant cartilage thinning, frequent joint effusion (fluid on the joint), and pain walking stairs or kneeling. (Prime candidate for biological intervention.)
Stage 4: Severe "Bone on Bone"
Near total loss of joint space with subchondral bone sclerosis and joint deformity. Evaluated carefully to determine if biological relief is still viable.
Our Comprehensive Osteoarthritis Roadmap
- Ultrasound Synovitis Assessment: Evaluating active blood flow and inflammatory thickening inside the joint lining.
- Biological Anti-Inflammatory Therapy: Utilizing concentrated PRP or Mesenchymal Stem Cells to deliver IL-1RA (interleukin-1 receptor antagonist) directly into the joint.
- Metabolic & Weight Optimization: Reducing systemic adipokines and circulating inflammatory markers that accelerate joint destruction.
- Long-Term Joint Preservation Tracking: Annual ultrasound tracking to monitor joint effusion and cartilage stability over time.
